What Is The Best Type of TV For Our Eyes?

LCD!

In the screen of an LCD monitor, each pixel is produced by a tiny cell which contains a thin layer of liquid crystals. These rod-shaped molecules bend light in response to an electric current. It's the same display technology that resides in your digital watch but more sophisticated.

Emissions - The Key To Protect Our Eyes!
The majority of LCD monitors are certified as "low emission" since they meet standards like MPR II or TCO. These guidelines were developed in Sweden (the acronyms are Swedish too) by a number of organizations to set limits for electric and magnetic field emissions. The newer TCO standards are the strictest. So if you're concerned about emissions look for MPR II or TCO certification, not just the words "low emission."

LCD televisions tend to be clearer than CRTs which can suffer from convergence or focus difficulties. Their improved clarity means that even small LCD televisions can display higher resolutions than the corresponding sized CRT. They also make small text easier to read. Unlike CRTs, LCD televisions have only one optimal resolution. At lower resolutions, the screen is redrawn as a smaller area or all the pixels in the image are blown-up to fill the screen. The latter solution can make images look jagged and blocky so be sure the resolution of the LCD television is the resolution you want to use.

Resolution
A factor for both CRTs and LCD televisions is resolution. The number of pixels horizontally and vertically defines a monitor's resolution in pixels or dots per inch (ppi or dpi). The greater the resolution, the more information or image you'll be able to view at once. The average user will find a resolution of 1024x768 more than sufficient for everyday work. You can achieve this resolution on CRT monitors 17 inches and larger or LCDs 15 inches and larger. Keep in mind that CRTs can display multiple resolutions, but LCD televisions and displays are optimized at only one resolution.

Extras
LCD Monitors can come with a variety of extras. Some have built-in speakers or jacks for microphones and headphones. Other monitors have dual inputs so you can connect two computers to the same monitor. With the advent of USB (Universal Serial Bus), some monitors have USB hubs at the back, allowing you to connect more peripherals. You can also get accessories like anti-glare filters and specialized mounting stands that help minimize glare and provide a comfortable working position.

Power Conservation
To keep your utility bill down, you should look for a monitor that is Energy Star compliant. Energy Star is a program developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to make energy-saving office equipment like computers and monitors. An Energy Star monitor automatically goes to sleep or powers down after a period of inactivity. This feature can save 60-80% of power during idle times. All you have to do to wake up the monitor is touch the keyboard or mouse.

Is Flashcard Really Effective?

The method of teaching babies with flash cards was pioneered by the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential (IAHP), a nonprofit organization that teaches parents how to maximize the potential of their brain-injured or normal child. The founder published his seminal – “How To Teach Your Baby To Read?” back in 1964.

IAHP believe that most people get nowhere near to realizing their full genetic potential and every child born has a greater potential intelligence than Leonardo da Vinci ever used in his lifetime.

Millions of families testify on the effectiveness of flashcards. With the support of technology and also the virtual world, parents are able to view thousands of videos on such testimonials. The question is how to do it right?

How do I flash to my child?

The word “flash” implies to parents that the cards have to be shown to children in fast speed.

Children are amazing learners and researchers had proven that their imaging abilities are far more advanced than our expectations. In order for flashcards to be effective, parents have to be mindful of:

- speed of flashing

- frequency of flashing

- font size of the cards

- colors of the fonts

- duration of each session

Information presented at speed is more easily apprehended by the right hemisphere of the brain. Unlike left-brain memorization, which requires conscious, directed effort, right-brain learning is unconscious and effortless. Children, and especially babies, learn at an extremely rapid pace – much faster than adults; much faster even than adults can imagine. The way to keep a child’s attention is to move quickly.

With these many variables to manage, parents sometime find it discouraging to continue flashing cards to their children. Besides, according to flashcard experts, they are not suppose to test their children on the words that they had learnt. Besides, each session has be short and succinct. This also implies that the parents have to make more time for more sessions per day.

Wow! This is tough!

Yes, indeed. Flashcard methodology is a science by itself whereby a lot of parents had under-estimated its complexity and effectiveness as well. This is the reason why WINKtoLEARN develops a premium range of Flashcard DVDs which provide parents a ready system and structure to introduce English and Chinese to their children from young.

Why Flashcard DVDs?

We complement flashcards 100%!

For all parents who do flashing of word cards to their children, they realized that it comes to a point they need to show real-life pictures for each word. The reason is simple. The child needs to know the meaning of the words. The easiest way and most effective way of helping the child is to use real-life pictures and photos. Association method is the most straightforward and effective way of defining the term to a child.

We know many parents spent many sleepless nights in front of their computer and of course loads of printer cartridges to print the right pictures for the child. Parents need a complementary product along with their physical flashcards.

Our DVD programs also provides parents with accurate pronunciation which is critical esp. for those non-English and non-Chinese speaking families.

One last important feature: It's THE only flashcard DVD program that transits your child smoothly from words to phrases and then to sentences. The first 4 levels of the DVD program introduce 400 words to your child. And the next two levels help your child to form proper phrases and sentences.

These are the reasons why WINKtoLEARN DVD programs were created. Our programs are effective with or without reinforcement from flashcard. The objective of these programs is clear; lead your child to his/her learning pursuit for knowledge in life.

What Is The Recommended Distance from TV for Children?

Safest Rule of Thumb: Sit FOUR Times Away from the TV!

What do we mean? The best is to give you an example:

If you own a 32 inch TV, you should position your baby 3.20 metres (4 x 32 inches) away from your television. For your convenience, we had tabulate a table below for your easy reference.

My Children are 2 and 5. Is This Program Suitable?

Our DVD programs serve children from 6 months till 7 years.

We have divided into three sub-age groups namely:

(1) 12 months and below

(2) 1 year to 3 years old

(3) 4 years to 7 year olds

However the methods in using our programs differ a little across the age groups. Therefore, we had provided a detailed parents' guide to aid parents in better using our DVD programs. Please refer to the FREE PRINTABLES section to download the detailed parents' guide to find out more.

Why Not VCDs?

Because it is only meant for 10 minutes per day!

There are tens of flashcard lessons within our DVD programs. We always recommend 1-2 lessons at the beginning of using our programs. In order to do so, DVD is one of the most convenient mediums to permit parents select the recommended lessons for every day. To achieve maximum effect, parents would need to follow a curriculum under Parents' Guide which is downloadable at FREE PRINTABLE.

DVD is also one of the easiest and most convenient multimedia format for adults and caregivers like elderly and household helpers.

How Should I Use The Speak & Read flashcard-based DVDs?

2 Simple Basic Rules:

Rule 1: Stop before your child wants to stop

Rule 2: Repetition. This is needed to make way for reinforcement. This helps your child to recognise the word from young effectively and effortlessly.

We have provided FREE parents' instructional guide as well as the curriculum for all the programs on our website for download.

What Are The Contents/Words Covered in The Flashcard DVDs?

More than 500 Words!

WINK to LEARN Flashcard DVD Program is one of the best and most cost-effective educational resources to help your child in acquiring multiple languages from young effectively.

Our programs introduce more than 500 words. Most importantly, our programs are the only ones in the marketplace that use these 500 words to help your child to progress from words to phrases and then to sentences. The words covered more than 55% of the first two years of elementary/primary schools.

How about DVD compatibility?

Our DVDs are compatible with all players and TV round the world. Why?

Because all our DVDs are in NTSC (Region-free) format. This is the primary format that all DVD players and television sets accept. Regional encoding is not mandatory or required by law, but is optional for all manufacturers. Thus region-free discs or "Region 0" discs have been becoming more and more common. Almost all the players sold these days are 100% compatible with NTSC (Region-free) format.

With the advent of high-quality screens on laptops, playing DVDs on the computer has become increasingly attractive, offering pictures with higher resolution than available with non-HD TVs. Although many software players are region-free, this may not matter since all computer DVD-ROM drives have been created with DVD locking (RPC-2) since January 2000. This allows one to change the region setting to a limit of five times, after which the region encoding is permanently set. But there are software overrides that can be purchased that allow the encoding to be changed without setting it on the drive - one of these is DVD Region-Free. For those whose DVD players does not have DVD locking DVD Genie, which is freeware, will reset the drive to the desired region. There is also the freeware region-free VLC media player that has this drive override built-in; it runs on Unix, Mac, and Windows systems, and apparently the Mac and Windows version has the override built into the executables, while the Unix system requires a library installation. This media player is quite comprehensive, and covers most audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, AVI, MOV, WAV, AU, WMV, MP3, OGG, etc...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols, and can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.
